2015-10-31(4 likes, 1 comment)Alternative Earth Organics added 5 new photos.Here is a short step by step guide of how our silver plugs are made. A few steps have been left out though, and the total time that it took to make
this batch was about 4 days (from printing the wax for the plugs to finishing), so it is a fairly time consuming process with a lot of waiting in
between. This was the first time casting fine silver for us (we usually only use sterling silver and 14k gold) and casting with the stones in place is
always a risk, as there is the possibility of them breaking through thermal shock - this is the reason we use sapphires and rubies for this process,
as they are more resistant to heat. Fortunately we had no breakages or fractures, even with the number of stones we used. Step 1: Arranging the
sapphires and rubies round the rim of the wax models. I have made each set with the same shape, colour and sized stones in the same order. Step 2:
Fixing the stones securely with wax Step 3: Attaching the models to the sprue tree and investing Step 4: Burnout and pouring of the molten
metal Step 5: Once the flask has cooled, break off the investment and pray that the cast worked!

natural sapphires and rubies. I have made these using a technique which is not used in body jewelry (I have never seen it - corect me if I am wrong)
whereby the stones are cast in place using the lost wax casting method. This can be a difficult process, and I will be making a follow up post with
process photos and descriptions. We are going to be making limited sets of plugs like these over the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for more
announcements! These two sets are available and I will be taking better outdoor shots tomorrow. Please email if interested :)

favourite stones and I was stoked to receive this cabochon to work with. We decided to keep with the rutile theme and this is the end result - solid

challenge myself a little more and make my first set of stone in stone hardware set plugs. The faceted cz gems are crazy sparkly and throw lots of
rainbows, and the cobalto calcite adds even more sparkle! I chose a copper bezel to compliment the colours of the stones, and they are entirely
